Nags Head: a salty tale of smarts

I have spent many hours in the Nag's Head pub in Glebe (Sydney). A lovely old building built before 1900. Ah, but I digress....... that's an interesting history of Nags Head NC - that coastline certainly has a colourful history when it comes to shipwrecks.
@Emjay - Googled your Nags Head -- looks like quite a nice spot for a brew or two and a book. Yes, the NC coastline's very colorful; in fact, the more I researched it online, the more I wanted to hop right into my car and head over to explore and experience!!
Nuttin' but a tourist trap...hahaha!!
@Beeeze - {grooooan}

The Nag's Head pub was very close to where I lived for about 5 years - it was popular with the backpacker group as well as starving students & yuppies - it was a wonderful eclectic mix of people.

There are some lovely lighthouses along the coast of the Carolinas.

Guess where I am from...
@GB - Um, could you be from Nags Head?!
Very close by. : ) Salty water, sun and seafood were my childhood. Pirates were the heroes of our little town. Until Donald Trump replaced them. Yuck.
They tore down one of Blackbeard's houses and built a hotel. A couple of years ago, they tore down the hotel and built a marina.
But the outer banks still have some of their original quaintness. Not because of developers, though; because of locals. The ecology has been devastated by developers and overfishing. Sorry, I sound negative. But it was what inspired me to do what I do, seeing it first hand.
What is nice, is that my ancestors were Brits, and Nags Head is actually the name of a rock in the Isles of Scilly, the western most point of the UK. And, the name of a cool pub. Connections.
There is some truth in that.

I lived in OBX (Outerbanks) for several years Waterbaby and they share the same tale of how Nags Head got its name. As for the truthfulness of it,... well *shrug* who knows. But historic maritime stories make for great tales around a roaring fire and a pint.

@GeologyByotch does Trump still park his huge freaking boat in the middle of the canals down there? Last time I drove from Currituck to Hatteras the canals seemed empty of oversized luxury boats.

@GeologyByotch - A helpful FYI so you won't miss it - Leicca posed this question for ya in a comment over at my blog: "GeologyByotch does Trump still park his huge freaking boat in the middle of the canals down there? @GB - thanks for the link. first off, any guy who calls cell phones unnecessary and intrusive and bans them in his establishment is someone after my own heart! that is just so cool and i love the looks and sound of the place. second, salty water, seafood and sun - such the idyllic childhood, i'm positively envious! and how very sad the destruction of the shore for developments the the greed of overfishing. the locals stepping up to the plate, that's really wonderful. sometimes the little guys can't win the war but those victorious small battles do matter. p.s. i so wanna go to that pub you linked now!
@Leicca - "But historic maritime stories make for great tales around a roaring fire and a pint" - you're absolutely right about that. I could listen for hours and hours until Mr. Sandman arrives, or I pass out from the pints, whichever comes first. Myth or truth, the origin of Nags Head is colorful and memorable!
